History Through Fiction is seeking a reliable, detail-oriented Part-Time Business Manager to support the financial organization and compliance of our growing independent publishing operation. This is a contract-based role with a very limited time commitment to start, ideal for a freelancer or small-business finance professional who enjoys working with creative, mission-driven organizations.

History Through Fiction is an independent press dedicated to publishing historically grounded fiction and supporting writers through editorial services, events, and educational programming. We are a small but growing business focused on sustainability, clarity, and long-term health.
Scope of Work
This role focuses on bookkeeping, compliance, and financial systems, with light strategic insight appropriate to a small business. Responsibilities may include:
Setting up, organizing, and maintaining QuickBooks
Ensuring accurate tracking and categorization of income and expenses
Reviewing and helping manage payment platforms such as Stripe and PayPal
Ensuring revenues are properly recorded and reported
Supporting tax compliance and readiness (in coordination with a CPA, if applicable)
Identifying unnecessary or superfluous expenses
Offering insight into efficient and responsible use of revenues
Helping establish clear, repeatable financial processes suitable for a small publisher
Ideal Candidate
Experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or small-business financial management
Comfortable working with QuickBooks, Stripe, PayPal, and similar platforms
Familiar with U.S. financial and tax-compliance requirements for small businesses
Organized, communicative, and able to explain financial matters clearly
Comfortable working within budget constraints and limited hours
Experience with publishing or other creative businesses is a plus, but not required
Time Commitment & Compensation
Very limited hours to start (estimated a few hours per month)
Contract / freelance arrangement
Compensation commensurate with experience; scope and rate to be discussed transparently
