That is the purpose behind Manuscript Matchup, History Through Fiction’s guided beta reader programme, which connects historical fiction authors with fellow authors and voluntary beta readers who share a passion for storytelling and history.
As the facilitator of Manuscript Matchup, I help create these connections and support authors throughout the feedback process. Through my work as a Historical Content Specialist and Acquisitions Reader with History Through Fiction, alongside running my own historical research business, Heritage Now, I have seen first-hand how valuable thoughtful feedback can be in strengthening a manuscript.
Manuscript Matchup was created to provide authors with a supportive space to develop their writing, exchange ideas with fellow storytellers, and gain meaningful insight into how their stories are experienced by different audiences.

Manuscript Matchup is a structured feedback programme designed specifically for historical fiction authors.
Finding reliable and useful feedback can often be one of the most challenging parts of the writing process. While friends and family can provide encouragement and support, authors often need feedback from people who can approach their manuscript with a fresh perspective — whether that is a fellow author who understands the craft of storytelling or a voluntary beta reader who can share the reader experience.
Manuscript Matchup helps bridge that gap by connecting authors with fellow writers and voluntary beta readers who are passionate about historical fiction and interested in supporting the development of new stories.
The programme is not about rewriting an author’s manuscript or replacing professional editorial services. Instead, it provides another important stage in the writing journey: the opportunity to understand how a manuscript works from different perspectives before it reaches publication.
How does Manuscript Matchup work?
The programme brings authors, fellow writers, and voluntary beta readers together through a guided matching process designed to create meaningful feedback partnerships.
Authors share information about their manuscript, including their historical period, genre, and the type of feedback they would find most valuable. From there, participants are matched with suitable feedback partners who can provide thoughtful perspectives on their work.
Throughout the programme, participants are encouraged to approach feedback as a conversation. Authors gain insight into how their story is received, while fellow writers and beta readers develop their ability to analyse, discuss, and support historical fiction thoughtfully.

Meet the Facilitator
Behind Manuscript Matchup is my passion for helping historical fiction authors develop their stories with confidence, authenticity, and reader insight.
I’m Grace E. Turton, a historian, researcher, and editorial professional with experience across historical publishing, manuscript assessment, and heritage research.
I have worked with History Through Fiction as the Historical Content Specialist and Acquisitions Reader, where I support authors through historical research, content development, and manuscript evaluation. Through this work, I have had the opportunity to read and assess historical fiction manuscripts, helping identify strengths, areas for development, and opportunities to ensure that stories are both engaging and historically informed.
Alongside my work with History Through Fiction, I am the founder of Heritage Now, a historical research and heritage support service dedicated to uncovering hidden stories and bringing the past to life. Through Heritage Now, I provide research support, accuracy checking, and historical guidance for writers, individuals, and heritage projects.
I hold an MA in Social History from Leeds Beckett University, where my research focused on Victorian Britain’s responses to Italian nationalism and unification, alongside a First-Class BA (Hons) degree in History and Media. My academic background, combined with my experience in publishing and research, allows me to approach historical fiction from both a historian’s perspective and an editor’s understanding of what makes a story connect with readers.
Through Manuscript Matchup, I bring together my experience in history, research, publishing, and storytelling to create a supportive environment where authors can receive valuable feedback, connect with fellow historical fiction enthusiasts, and continue developing their craft.

About Grace E. Turton
Grace E. Turton is a historian, founder of Heritage Now, Acquisitions Reader, and Historical Content Specialist for History Through Fiction. She holds an MA in Social History and a BA in History & Media from Leeds Beckett University. Through her work with History Through Fiction and Heritage Now, Grace conducts historical research, prepares reports for forthcoming novels, supports authors through the writing process, and helps ensure historical accuracy across fiction, nonfiction, journal articles, and podcasts.
