History Through Fiction, an independent publisher of historical fiction novels, is proud to announce that we are now accepting submissions for historical fiction short stories and novel excerpts.

Beginning May 1, 2022, in conjunction with the launch of our free access Member-only Content Area, History Through Fiction will publish historical fiction short stories and novel excerpts. One new story or novel excerpt will be released on the first day of each month and will be accessible via free log-in membership. Authors whose work is accepted for publication will receive a $25 honorarium for their work and stories that are accepted will receive light editing before being scheduled for publication. To qualify, stories and novel excerpts must be previously unpublished and should be between 2,000 and 8,000 words long. HTF prefers stories that are based on real historical events and/or people. However, all stories with any kind of historical setting will be considered – this includes those with elements of fantasy and alternative history. History Through Fiction will reserve first time rights for all stories published. Writers who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ, disabled, neuro-diverse or as a member of other marginalized and traditionally underrepresented communities are strongly encouraged to submit their work. Please visit our submission guidelines for complete details.

Launched in 2019 by author/historian Colin Mustful, History Through Fiction is an independent press that publishes historical novels that are based on real events and people and rooted in research. In addition to publishing novels, History Through Fiction maintains a regular blog and hosts a seasonal podcast featuring historical novelists talking about their books and craft. In November 2021, History Through Fiction added to its content by launching What’s New in Historical Fiction, a virtual panel series featuring historical novelists with new and upcoming titles. In January 2022, History Through Fiction announced the signing of New York Times bestselling author, Alina Adams. Her upcoming novel, My Mother’s Secret: A Novel of the Jewish Autonomous Region, is scheduled for release on November 15, 2022.
