Now Accepting Applications: Remote Publishing Internship for Fall 2026

Books often arrive in a reader’s hands looking complete and inevitable. The cover is finished. The pages are clean. The story feels whole.

What readers do not always see is the quiet work that makes that possible: the reviewing, editing, organizing, designing, promoting, and communicating that help a manuscript become a book and help that book find its audience.

At History Through Fiction, that work matters deeply. We believe that the past still has something urgent to say to the present, and that story-driven historical fiction can help readers encounter history with greater imagination, empathy, and care.

That is why we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for our Remote Publishing Internship – Fall 2026.

This internship offers a behind-the-scenes opportunity to learn how an independent press operates while contributing to meaningful, hands-on work. Interns will gain practical experience across several areas of publishing, work directly with founder and editor Colin Mustful, and receive mentorship designed to support a future career in the field.

A closer look at independent publishing

Independent publishing asks people to wear many hats well.

At a small press, editorial work does not live in isolation from marketing. Design decisions shape how a book is introduced. Author relationships influence how stories are shared. Every stage of the process matters, from the first manuscript review to the final public conversation around a book.

This internship is designed to offer exposure to that larger picture.

Rather than focusing on only one narrow area, interns will get a practical look at how publishing functions as a connected, collaborative process. For anyone interested in books, literary culture, and the work that helps strong stories reach readers, that kind of experience can be both clarifying and energizing.

What interns may do

Intern responsibilities may include:

  • reviewing and tracking manuscript submissions

  • assisting with developmental, copy, and proof edits

  • writing blog posts and author features

  • supporting social media management and engagement

  • helping maintain and update the HTF website

  • designing digital marketing materials using Canva

  • assisting with direct outreach and publicity campaigns

  • managing digital files and analytics through Google Drive and social platforms

  • supporting podcast or video production for the HTF YouTube channel

Because independent publishing is inherently collaborative, interns will have the chance to see how these responsibilities connect. Editorial judgment, communication, design sense, and audience awareness are not separate tracks so much as parts of the same larger effort.

What you will gain

For the right applicant, this internship offers more than a line on a resume.

It is a chance to learn how books move from idea to publication inside a mission-driven independent press. It is also a chance to contribute directly to the launch of an upcoming historical novel and to the broader work of amplifying authors who bring the past to life through fiction.

Interns will gain hands-on experience in:

  • editorial development and manuscript review

  • marketing and audience engagement

  • website and content support

  • publicity and author relations

  • the day-to-day rhythm of a small independent press

Just as importantly, interns will participate in regular video meetings and receive personalized mentorship from Colin Mustful. For applicants considering careers in publishing, editing, literary marketing, or related creative work, that direct guidance is part of what makes this opportunity distinctive.
