Meet the Intern: Get to know Evelyn Nygren, our fall intern and lifelong book enthusiast

Hi everyone! I’m Evelyn Nygren, History Through Fiction’s new intern for this season. I’m a recent graduate from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a minor in Creative Writing, as well as a Certificate in Editing and Publishing. I’m incredibly excited to be interning with History Through Fiction this fall, as I have a great interest in and respect for the publishing industry. Because of this, I hope to learn a lot from this experience, as I would one day like to work in a publishing house full time, either as an Editor or as a Literary Translator, since I also have a great interest in translation fiction.

Apart from my work with History Through Fiction, I can be found shelving books and chatting with customers at my local Barnes & Noble. There, I am often tasked with keeping up to date on the newest releases—anything from the most recent Stephen King novel, to the latest Tik-Tok recommendation, to Barnes & Noble’s own monthly picks. At the same time, I do my best to help people find what they’re looking for and give them a few recommendations in the process.

In my free time, I of course read a lot of books—some of which are historical fiction, but most of which are within the realm of the fantastical. This has been my favorite genre for years, as fantasy was what got me fully back into reading when I was in middle school. Since then, I have been consuming books with alarming speed and have been inspired by authors like Robin Hobb (Farseer Trilogy), Jonathan Stroud (Lockwood and Co.), and George R. R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire) to write my own fantasy novel one day. When I do dabble in historical fiction, I often read books that take place during World War II—as those are usually the books my mother gives me to read—or novels from the Romantic and Victorian periods. Aside from these, I can also be found reading more contemporary, literary fiction, or the occasional romance novel my sister has forced upon me. Aside from reading, I am either knitting, singing, meeting up with friends, or going on adventures with my younger sister.
