The U.S.–Dakota War of 1862: A Historical Context

The Brookings Public Library will host author and historian Colin Mustful for a live virtual event on Monday, November 2, at 6:30 pm Central Time. Presenting as a scholar for the South Dakota Humanities Council Speaker’s Bureau, Mustful traces the history of the U.S. - Dakota War beginning in 1805 when the Dakota signed the Pike Treaty at Bdote and identifies the multiple perspectives and factors that, over time, contributed to the Mankato hangings and the expulsion of the Dakota and Ho-Chunk peoples from Minnesota to Crow Creek, South Dakota.
