Meet the Intern: Madelyn Valento

My name is Mady and I am a third year Anthropology major at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. I am also getting my minor in Creative Writing and a Certificate in Editing and Publishing. I’m undertaking this internship with HTF because of my passion for history as well as my interest in learning more about the industry from both the publishing and authorial side. The industry has so many more parts than I knew about, and I think the skills learned throughout this internship will be transferable to all sorts of other jobs and even as I pursue my education. Hopefully, by the end of the internship I will have sharpened my editing skills and knowledge of the publishing world and have a better idea of what I would like to do in the future related to editing and publishing.

It is my dream to someday write a novel of my own and hopefully get it published, most likely something fantasy! I recently got my first short story published in Axiom Magazine on the UMN campus. I try to have one or two pieces of writing or worldbuilding in progress at all times, and I like to incorporate things that I learn in my anthropology classes into my creative works. I have a twin brother who is into writing just as much as I am, and I would love to work on something with him some day!

I love all sorts of sci fi/fantasy media including Genshin Impact, Red Rising, and Throne of Glass. My current favorite historical tv show is The Last Kingdom while my favorite historical book series is The Poppy War trilogy by R.F. Kuang. And if I had to pick a favorite history inspired game, it would be Ghost of Tsushima.
